Biodegradable Pads
Our Mission
The Cal State LA team enthusiastically investigated feminine hygiene products in the development of an eco-friendly product. Our research found feminine products have not change since their invention in 1896. Historic failures within the industry exists such as: the alarming use of plastic materials and waste products that all end up in the landfills. This issue is catastrophic because plastics do not decompose and are not recyclable once they enter the landfills. There is some hope, the team did discover a few companies with eco-friendly concepts and options, such as Eco by Naty, The Honest Company, and Rael.
The Cal State LA team rose to the challenge of envisioning a new biodegradable product that would significantly reduce environmental footprint. The team designed a feminine product using seaweed textiles and recycled seed paper, in combination with phytology, or plant science, to ultimately recycle the byproducts of feminine hygiene into an alternative: plant fertilizing seed starters. Our vision, Flora Nouveau, would be produced here in California, and the seeds that are embedded into our packaging would be sourced locally and changed out seasonally. The packaging surrounding our product has the aesthetic of soft nature-inspired colors while also adding the element of biology. The feature that our pad has is multiple layers that include cotton and algae to ensure the liquid is pulled into the fiber provided a non-leak pad. Our pad is fueled by algae because of the properties it holds. It is breathable, has high absorbency, anti-bacterial, and biodegradable. While the user is going through their menstrual cycle, they will be able to plant the pads with a seed paper envelope that will grow their desired flowers. Flora Nouveau is created for all women; our product is designed to be beautiful while being environmentally conscious.
